Adobe Youth Voices

Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) enables young people to use cutting-edge multimedia and digital tools to communicate and share their ideas. In the beginning of 2008, Adobe and the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network established a partnership to implement the AYV program in a select number of Clubhouses.

Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) is the Adobe Foundation's signature philanthropy program designed to provide youth in underserved communities with the critical skills they need to become active and engaged members of their communities and the world at large. The program enables young people to use cutting-edge multimedia and digital tools to communicate and share their ideas, demonstrate their potential, and take action where they live.

The AYV program encourages young people to create media with a sense of purpose. The participants take a look at the social and personal issues that affect them most and comment on them through video, animation, music composition, audio documentaries, etc.

AYV Clubhouses receive training, software and funds to create multimedia projects that give young people a way to speak about issues in their community.  The support the Clubhouses receive for the AYV program allows Clubhouse Members to apply their technical skills and interests to the world around them.

Our Clubhouse in Amman, Jordan has witnessed a rise in the involvement of Clubhouse alumni -- using their creative skills to give back to the younger generation, while commenting on some of the issues that face young people. These alumni have been leading software workshops, initiating brainstorming discussions, and facilitating open dialogues. One of their projects is looking at the role of girls in their country and ways to encourage women all over to aspire to greater career & educational paths.

The James Lee Computer Clubhouse/AYV partnership in Fairfax, Virginia is working on documenting the construction of a pedestrian overpass spanning a dangerous highway. The overpass, however, also has been serving as a metaphorical “bridge” between two communities that have little interaction with each other. As a bi-product of the AYV program, the Clubhouse Members have formed a digital pen pal relationship with youth in a community on the other side of the highway and are already in communication with them.  (end)

AYV participants in the Redwood City Boys & Girls Club Clubhouse in California decided to tackle the issue of high school drop-outs in their community for one of their projects. A young Clubhouse member who left school for the allure of the streets was interviewed about his experiences and life story. It was a powerful video testimonial about the struggles that a typical inner-city young person may face while coming of age. However, it also served as an inspirational tool, as the member changed the direction of his life in the end. With the help of our Adobe partners, the member who created this piece ended up having the video showcased at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. (end)
