The population increased in the twentieth century with the arrival of a large numbers of immigrants: Portuguese, Italians, Spaniards, Lebanese and others who have made São Paulo the cosmopolian center of Brazil and who have decisively contributed to its phenomenal growth. The city, in turn, made it's mark on them with its lifestyle and turnerd them all into proud Paulistas, inhabitants of the state of São Paulo. The Paulistas have many reasons to feel this way. Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, is proud os having been in 1893 on the first cities in the world to be planned. The rectangular grid patter of its streets is cut by diagonal avenues and corresponds to avantgarde city planning at the time. The plan unfortunately overlooked the irregular nature of the site's relief. Since the site is not flat, the streets were built with steep slopes so as to strictly follw geometric plan.

Despite their minutes, the lands of the State of Espirito Santo are quite diversified, squeezed between the State of Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Minas Gerais. Cut down the middle by waters of the Doce River, the lands show similarities to those of the adjoining States, but one in particular to each, rather being a mixture of all three. In fact, it would seem the state managed to strike a happy medium between them, absorbing the best of their customs and cultures.
