Background:United South End Settlements (USES), incorporated in its current organizational form in 1960, is a human service agency serving a lower income population residing in the South End/Lower Roxbury sections of Boston. USES' mission is to be a catalyst bringing together the resources of participants, community, and agency to
USES' constituents reflect the diverse, multi-ethnic, and racial character of the community, and range in age from 3 to over 100 years. November 2, 1996, The United South End Settlements opened the second Computer Clubhouse for urban children. The Computer Clubhouse is a model drop-in after-school learning environment where young people explore their own interests and become confident learners through the use of techonolgy. At the Clubhouse, youth from surrounding communities use state-of-the art computers and software to experiment and develop computer-based projects inspired by their own ideas. Members work closely with adult mentors and staff, creating a rich and diverse learning community. The Clubhouse has aired on Channel 7, had a visit from Mayor Menino, and has over 200 members and 50 volunteers. The Computer Clubhouse program was developed by The Computer Museum (now part of the Museum of Science) in collaboration with the MIT Media Laboratory. The Clubhouse at USES is sponsored by many corporations and foundations including the Timothy Smith Fund, Adobe Software, United Way and Verizon Clubhouse members must be 12 to 18 years of age and the Clubhouse is free of charge.
